SME BOOKKEEPING GUIDE · MONTH-END CLOSING

Simple Monthly Bookkeeping Closing Checklist:
7 Practical Steps to Reliable Financials.

A 7-step practical closing guide for SME founders and finance operators: from bank reconciliations, receivable and supplier bill controls, stock opname and COGS calculations, accruals and depreciation, to tax readiness and owner financial reviews. Statutorily referenced under SAK EMKM Chapters 3–8 and KUP Law Article 28.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT · FINANCIAL CERTAINTY

Why is monthly closing indispensable?

Many owners see busy shops daily, yet their bank balance is depleted by month-end. Operating without monthly closing is like steering a ship without a compass:

01

Timely Real Profit & Loss Measurement

You do not need to wait until year-end to discover whether a product line or branch is profitable. Monthly closing provides early warnings if margins are compressed by rising costs or leakage.

02

Controlling Aging Receivables & Payables

Tied-up cash in uncollected customer receivables is the primary cause of insolvency in growing businesses. Monthly closing produces verified aging registers for immediate collection.

03

Zero-Panic Tax Readiness & Annual Returns

When books are closed orderly each month, compiling Coretax e-Faktur, VAT returns, and Annual Corporate Tax returns becomes a simple rollover rather than weeks of chaotic receipt-hunting.

STRATEGIC OWNER ANALYSIS · DECISION MAKING

3 questions every founder must ask during financial reviews

Financial statements should not just sit in filing cabinets. Founders must evaluate 3 key metrics upon every monthly close:

QUESTION 1 · CASH VS PROFIT

What is net profit, and did bank cash actually increase?

Profit on paper is not necessarily cash in bank due to uncollected receivables or inventory build-ups. Compare your bank balance change to net income. If profit is healthy but cash is tight, inspect receivables and inventory.

QUESTION 2 · RECEIVABLE HEALTH

How many invoices are overdue by more than 30 days?

Inspect the Aging AR register. Invoices unpaid after 30 days have exponentially higher default risks. Enforce credit holds on delinquent accounts and offer early-payment discounts.

QUESTION 3 · CASH RUNWAY

How many months of operational runway remain in the bank?

Calculate average monthly fixed overheads (wages, rent, utilities, commitments). Healthy SMEs maintain at least 1 to 3 months of operating runway to absorb seasonal drops.
